Heather was born in Jacksonville, Arkansas to a German-American mother and I Mexican father where she lived until the age of five. Both parents suffered from mental illness, Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder. She spent the next fifteen years in the northern side of Mexico having raised her younger siblings and moved back to Arkansas in 2001 where she attended High School and College and attended the University of Central Arkansas where she studied Business Management and Administration with a minor in Psychology. In 2005 she became the first title holder of Miss Arkansas Latina and is the former Vice-President of LULAC Council 750 in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2007 she made the transition to the Dallas/Ft. Heather worked in retail management, human resources and recruiting for about twelve years until her diagnosis.
Heather serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Chairman of the Board of the Cancer has Cancer Foundation. The charity's name comes from Heather's zodiac sign of being a Cancer having Cancer. In September of 2010 at the age of 28 she was diagnosed with a less than 2% aggressive form of Ovarian Cancer, Germ Cell mix Epithelial Stage III-C. After undergoing a six hour surgery the next day for de-bulking of the 17cm by 14cm mass and others that had spread. Removal of a dozen lymph nodes, parts of her stomach and intestinal track and nearly both ovaries, she underwent aggressive treatment regimen referred to as the BEP, a form of Chemotherapy. At the end of her treatment she was given these results 60% chance of a recurrence before the five year mark, if so 10% chance of living past the five year mark and a 40% chance of having children. As a result of her drastic diagnosis she decided to dedicate herself to supporting research that will lead to finding a cure for all cancers through raising funds towards Molecular Cancer Research in hopes to find a cure within her life time while finding a personal balance and living life in the here and right now.
As a result of Heather's own diagnosis of Major Depression, ADHD, PTSD and Anxiety she is an advocate not only for Cancer Awareness but also supports the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in awareness for mental health. She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer Stage II-C which attacked the right ovary. After going through 10 ½ months of extensive Chemotherapy she was giving the good news that she was finally in remission. It does not mean that she is cancer free. She was giving a 45% chance of recurrence before the five year mark of being totally cancer free and 60% chance of having children which she desperately wants.
She was put in contact with Heather for guidance and moral support and was then asked to join the Foundation on February 8, 2011. In efforts to raise awareness for all types of cancers, not just her type which she was so very excited to become a part of to find a cure for all. She plans to go back to school for Radiation Therapy so she can fulfill her purpose with working closely with Cancer patients. There is nothing more than what she feels she needs to devote her life to other than Awareness. She was diagnosed with stage 3.75 of Ovarian Cancer at age 23 in May 2010. The cancer had attacked both ovaries, uterus, colon, bladder, lymph nodes and fallopian tubes. Not only was the tumor in her left ovary bigger than a volleyball but in her right ovary there was a dermoid, which has a 1-2% of being cancer, she was in that small percentile. She had a full hysterectomy. Going through chemotherapy from July 2010 to October 2010. Thankfully she is moving towards remission now for 2 years and is staying positive.
On one particular night Brittany decided to go on Facebook and see if she could find anybody going through something similar as her. The "Heather has Ovarian Cancer" page came up, she quickly reached out to her and got an immediate response from Heather and the rest is history. :-)
Like Tamara, Brittany loves to write poetry its a passion she has always had.
